is this old girl dying or already died?

G doesn't seem to recommend it much. I still think its a useful size for PC laptop, possibly tablets.

I just don't feel the love on the 728x90 leaderboards

Your thoughts..

I used to have a 468x60 top right of a site

This is what it did July 2013

Ad request: 90,599
Clicks: 683
CTR: 0.75%
CPC £0.10
RPM: £0.77
Earnings: £69.52

Same site July 2014 with the 468x60 swapped out for a 970x90 directly under the navigation

Ad request: 130,844
Clicks: 3,704
CTR: 2.83%
CPC: £0.24
RPM: £6.77
Earnings: £886.29

World of difference

Overall I prefer several smaller banners than a single obtrusive/large one. With that said, I do have certain sites that do well with the larger banner sizes also. The key is to just test what works for your particular site design. I don't think it's about a particular banner working better than another - it's about how it's integrated and how prominent it is overall.

Don't overlook text units - on certain sites where the ads that show up are nicely targetted, I've found they get better results than any banner size I've tried...

I don't suppose you chaps would like to share your sites that do well with Adsense? I'm just curious as I've never really done well with banners of any kind, I only seem to get results with text links. It would be interesting to see what others are doing.
