600+ shoe domains... the rationale?

So this morning early hours roughly 600 .co.uk shoe and sneaker domains, mostly with ineffective or convoluted word combinations, dropped. A blitz of seemingly useless domains that have been junked.

But I'm curious. Can somebody explain what would have been the rationale for registering them in the first place. I'm left feeling, well there must be some reason, so I'm wondering what.

What does anyone want with 600 shoe domains?

Maybe legacy from time were you could throw up a site an EMD and stuff with keywords to get it to rank ?

Also some people would 301 keyword domains to a main site in the belief that it had some SEO benefit, even though the domains never had a site on them. A pointless exercise for sure.
