I'm pretty sure you don't even need to use the canonical tag admin, acorn from a brief look doesn't seem to have canonical issues

Correct. It's worse to have a bad canonical tag than no canonical tag at all.

hmm, not been using canonical correctly to date and doesn't seem to be a problem as it's only showing one result when searching text strings.
