Greetings.

I was hoping to get some advice and suggestions. I work for a company which acquired, in the mid-1990s, a few generic underwear related domain names.

underwear.co.uk
bras.co.uk
knickers.co.uk

These domains have nothing to do with our current business, and buying/selling of domains is not part of our business. Hence we've recently decided to dispose of these domains.

My question is what is the best strategy for selling these domains. We've received a few unsolicited offers in the range of £2,000 to £3,000 each, but suspect they are worth a little bit more than that.

We are obviously touching base with underwear retailers, and manufacturers, to see if there is any interest there. This is rather time consuming.

We are considering listing them on Sedo for a premium auction (is this a good strategy?)

Are there any other steps the domain experts here would to suggest we take?

It's not a bad idea. If you publicise the auction well beforehand then it's probably as good as any technique. Just make sure all possible interested parties have been given good notification, plus post that it's being auctioned on the various domain name forums and affiliate marketing forums to generate some buzz.

Would recommend Sedo (a general auction may be more appropriate).

Sedo will get you a world wide audience. Cold calling manufacturers is unlikely to lead to a sale.

Cracking names - ought to be worth well in excess of that for sure.

They will be the ones that pay the best price for them.

Ensure you are not locked in for several months - one top domain I know of failed to sell at auction and the owner could not sell elsewhere due to a lock in clause. He ended up with less in his pocket as the week or two before the 6 month deadline expired Sedo did some 'promo' and sold it to a domainer :)

Cheers,
Rob.

Nice !!!!

When i first read dispose of, i thought for 1 nano second you were allowing them to expire, obviously not :(
Go on stick them on Sedo but make sure underwear manufacturers / retailers are made aware of this sale and stress how good having these excellent generic keyword names could be for their company in terms of search engine optimisation.

Would be nice if La senza and ann summers got in on these or Underworld, Sorry that's Coronation street lol

Good luck and don't sell them for pennies unless selling to me of course :p

I agree with Rob saying that retailers would pay the best price if they are interested, so if you have the patience, keep approaching companies directly.

Why not put a "sale pack" together that gives the case for buying the generic domain. The main benefit in owning the generic is that you can "own" the sector, so say so in a nice brochure and send it to potential buyers and see what kind of response you get.

One of those £2-£3k offers was me so I'm probably not exactly impartial, sell!... sell!, I mean, erm, yeah sedo auction would work if you can promote it but as with any of the major auction houses they will want it exclusively for a set period. I see you have sold lingerie.co.uk, great set of domains.

Sedo is your best bet for a hassle-free, no-nonsense sale. It will also allow you to reach a wide audience of potential buyers. There is of course the option of selling privately through a forum such as this, and in doing so avoid the sales commission. I for one would put in an offer above the £2-3k level if they were being invited, as I expect others would. There's so much experience with the members of this board that you'd get a good, competitive price.

There's always a slight possibility of selling to a 'big player' but this is so rare and you have to be be prepared to sit on your wannabe 'golden egg' for as long as it takes. Too many owners over-value their DNs, so the resale market remains more static than it would otherwise be if owners were realistic. If you're looking for peace of mind re valuation, take a look through previous DN sales in the .co.uk market (published everywhere, e.g. DNJournal) and gauge worth yourself, as its all subjective, especially in today's market.

Just my opinion.
