I didn't receive any reminders from Nominet or 123reg over car-hire couk being expired.

Luckily Mark B (DG) let me know. Thanks Mark!

Seems I hadn't transferred the domain into my 123 account, even though I'd changed the tag, so it didn't get renewed. That will teach me!

Never ever rely on the reminders.
Do keep a list of domains with expiration date.
And avoid the buggy registrars like 123 like the plague or you could very well lose your domain. I would check the new expiration date in the whois just in case.

I'm quite lucky, if I forget to renew a domain, its always available to register at any time in the future lol

Expect less reminders as registrars can keep domains themselves.

For any domain that you feel is worth £xxxx+ you really should be registering it for the full 10 years surely?

Yep, probably!

Gets quite expensive paying for the .uk and .co.uk for 5 years as it is!

Thanks for your thoughts the other day Monkey by PM.

No worries :)

For now I'm not going to bother registering the .uk's I'm entitled to, unless I'm going to immediately develop them. There doesn't seem to be any real benefit - if anyone wants to contact you regarding them they can work out how to.

I thought the registrars can only keep them if they have the express permission of the domain owner, and given most domains drop through the owner not being aware, they won't give permission either!

Yes but I can see this turning into a 'read the small print' or 'tick this box to continue registering' and then finding that you have agreed to give permission at registration. Nominet have shown time and time again that people can bend the rules and they will do nothing if it's in their interest. Looking at the top registrars and their relationship to some nominet members it wouldn't hurt certain people there for domains to be kept after expiry. Of course I may be wrong :)
