As of 14th of March Dmoz will be shut down, AOL couldnt keep the project running and the DMOZ name will no longer be used.

There is talk of it popping up in another form, for those wishing to get hold of a Database dump before it bites the dust you can do so here : http://rdf.dmoz.org/

Although an out dated concept, still a shame to see another giant go.

I used Dmoz a lot for competitor research for myself and clients. Also good for finding similar sites.

Strange that they took the time to redesign the site last June after years with the same 1.0 appearance.

I'm not sad at all,
It was/is a site that has a lot of blackhat practices taking place.
Some of the editors deliberatly placing their own affiliated websites at the top of pages and then in several other categories whilst at the same time deleting other website links. Or even worse, offering to charge for a listing.

But my categories were a bit like tumbleweed! How I longed for a DMOZ listing back in the day!!!

Downloaded a copy of the data (structure & content) as it might come in handy. Presuming of course that I can access it in some way.

Like filtering through categorised listings in 5 - 10 years time finding domains which no longer have sites on them much like you can do now via the archive with the old Yahoo, just with dmoz with the data in your hand it would be far easier to cross reference a check on scale.

Seemed like a club to me, you had to know someone to get a listing

I did know someone so I could get listings, never had to give them money but I wouldn't be surprised if it went on back in the day when people felt dmoz had a lot of weight

I was also an editor myself for a period for my local town section

I'm a bit sorry to see it go

I remember when I was younger over 10 years ago I got my first businesses website listed on there without any problem just through a standard submission. It was such a niche site and hardly worthy of a listing.

That is the one and only site I ever got listed on there though, first time lucky!
