Question for you all.

My partner was online earlier on the desktop getting car insurance quotes.

Even though we have a multi car policy with Admiral, he uses confused every now and again just to double check, seeing as admiral own it and most of the top companies are admiral group, it seems pointless to me, but he does it anyway.

So a couple of hours later, I'm on here, and I just looked at a thread, and the google ad at the bottom had a banner, with the name of our car, and 3 prices from companies, the prices are the exact amounts he was quoted earlier to the penny.

I went to confused.com to check if he was signed in, and he wasnt.

It is very very clever, but are they allowed to leave this sort of information on your computer?

Thank you in advance.

Yes.

Try searching for a dell conputer, you will be shown those ads for yeeeears!

Nightmare, I thought at least quotes were personal. Once you log out that should be it.

Thanks Rob.

Thanks Stas, I knew about most of this, but to actually reveal what is supposed to be private quotes based upon our data, well to me its absurd it appears.

Thats life I guess.

It only appears to you on here, other users will get results based on their own searches so it's not revealing anything private outside of your PC.

Also note, don't look at any dating sites! as you'll start seeing ads for those too if you do (which might reveal your activity to someone who uses your PC that you don't want to see this).

lol

I was more worried about the life insurance quotes I was getting him last week :D

so no visiting porn sites without clearing the cookies ;), on a serious note...i bought the missus a watch and the cookie followed me around for eons...its also like when you purchase something from ebay, the purchase is always shown on the homepage when you re-enter....which is annoying

this is completely normal, you're being retargeted. Usually best practice is to have the cookie expire after a certain amount of time so that those ads dont follow you forever and piss you off.

I always thought it was an advertising network which tracked your search history / preferences and displayed advertising on participating sites building to your 'profile' so to speak. I assumed that's how you see the same banners on the sun newspaper / hotmail / popular news sites etc

bloody nightmare when the gf has been looking at dresses and girly stuff and then for next week or two all the ads you see are for them!

or if your researched a new site then all u get is those ads ... i.e high chairs haha

actually, you're right, think it does that too.

we all know what sites you've been looking at max, no need to blame the gf! http://xdress.com

That's a good thing though because it means she hasn't bought them. When you don't see them is when you should be worried ;)
