I am wondering if there are any authorative guides written on SEO? I realsie that any printed publication is likely to be somewhat out of date in the fast moving seo world, but I imagine that 90% of the funadamentals remain the same.

A quick look at Amazon suggested this weight tone is well liked - http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/0596518862/?tag=acorn06-21

Anybody read it? Any other suggestions?

In the same vein if anybody has any recommendations on web marketing / monetising I would be interested in those too.

Thanks
Stephen.

If you're looking for good coverage of the basics, you should be able to get that free from the following...

http://www.google.com/webmasters/docs/search-engine-optimization-starter-guide.pdf
http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com/2010/01/google-seo-resources-for-beginners.html
http://guides.seomoz.org/beginners-guide-to-search-engine-optimization

Plus the following checklist...
http://www.seomoz.org/article/search-ranking-factors

And the extremely comprehensive "report card" Google issued itself on the SEO readiness of its own web properties...
http://www.google.com/webmasters/docs/google-seo-report-card.pdf

Of course, if you're willing to pay, then you'd do well to also get yourself a copy of SEO Book from http://www.seobook.com/

Hope this helps!

Thanks Edwin - great info as usual.

I am really looking for something that is printed so I can read on holiday!

Anybody got any printed suggestions?

Stephen.

The only book on SEO I've bought is David Viney's "Get to the top of Google" a few years ago. This offers a good overview of the subject, and has a good section on how to prepare press releases. I keep telling people about press releases in an effort to get round to it myself, but that really is in my opinion a good weapon for SEO. If you can write good copy that other websites will carry, you pick up good links, sometimes very good links from major news sites, and your sites will start to motor. The problem is, a lot of people find it hard to write the release in the first place, and for some subjects where you are just trying to promote a shopping product, e.g. a fridge, it can be hard to think what to say.

See if this book has had an update recently, and if so, I'd say it was worth the money. I would also be interested in book recommendations from others.

As for monetisation, my thoughts would be to focus on a few sites where the revenue streams have potential.

Also, if you have some niche sites where you can't find affiliate programmes, think about taking direct advertising yourself. This should be far more lucrative than AdSense.

Go for SEO bible ebook for complete knowledge of SEO. It is a perfect book for beginners as well as for expert too. You can download the pdf file from the internet and save it in your desktop.
