Just thought I would share a puzzle with everyone. This is taken from an old 11+ exam paper.

Must admit it took me nearly an hour to work it out. If I was old enough it looks like I was a fail on the exam then.

One of the following numbers is out of sequence with the others, which one is it ?

1 9 16 23 27 31 34

It's 23

took me less than a minute

23 took me a splite second coz I saw pendragon's answer.

Still don't know why it's 23.....

I forwarded the problem on to the PAB...

After a good hour of passionate debate, held over a really nice lunch paid for out of my membership fees, they couldn't come up with an answer that took account of the wider stakeholder community.

They have therefore formed a sub-committe that will produce a paper on the matter for discussion at the PAB meeting to be held in January 2009.

On the plus side, Rob says that the salmon & cucumber sandwiches were "simply divine love".

easy, 20 sec :) reducing addition or whatever you want to call it, you must be having a bad day droid, perhaps the gorgeous sunshines distracting you..

8..7..6..5..

Ah yes, the days of eleven plus. When exams WERE exams, boys could be boys and climbing trees didn't need a risk assessment and COSHH form!

Hope there is room on the dunce bench for me too Droid, I had to google it and still couldnt find the answer.

Duly moved over to make room on the bench ;)

To make it worse, I actually cheated , I saw the answer was 23 and it took me pretty much all that time to work out why.

Tried this out on my class

Thought I'd put this up on the whiteboard in class, while I took the register - give them something to get on with...

One of them had solved it before I'd even opened the register up!
Obviously had been taught well ;)
