We’re delighted to announce that we will be providing registry and DNS services for the new .blog top-level domain extensions. Automattic, the parent company of WordPress.com, will offer the .blog domain extensions through its subsidiary, Knock Knock, WHOIS There (KKWT), starting later this year. The company expects to activate 250,000 new names in 2016.

We’ll be providing the registry services, as well as technical support to the registrar channel. .blog will allow users to create a customised name and web address for their site. Users will not need to have a WordPress or WordPress.com site to purchase one.

This partnership with KKWT builds on our world-leading expertise in running domains and follows on from last month’s announcement that we will be providing registry and DNS services for Minds + Machines Group Limited’s 28 top-level domains (TLDs), including .london and .work, subject to the normal ICANN and client approvals.

Saw this on the email, made me laugh, thanks Nominet.

Any thoughts on .blog. I don't personally like all these new generic tld's. But could be tempted to pre order a few .blogs's - It's risk free to pre-order I think..?

I like it - it's short, memorably, appropriate and owned by the right people.

I'm sure plenty of bloggers out there who'll like it too.

Still not buying any though - the blogging audience, particularly when starting up, are notorious cheapskates!

I think .blog could work, its just a question if it will ever become mainstream quick enough before the rot sets in. Surprised Goolge not pushing .youtube through quicker, considering how many vloggers there are now.

.web is supposed to the .com killer, but I don't feel the love on it.

If wordpress give one to all their paying subscribers with no ads, and with ads to all who use their platform I think it would work.
