Either I was very unlucky or the site that I used to check available domain names registered a name.

It was a good .co.uk. Checked it - was available (checked with nominet too) and then within the hour it was taken. It isn't a topical domain name.

Is this a practice that is known to happen? Registrars registering names that visitors search for before they register them by themselves?

May just be a big coincidence.

Yes, it does happen, there was a topic on the same subject recently, I know an outfit that use to regularly register names you would check, can't remember their name, it's on the tip of my tongue, their excuse was they were registering them to protect the potential domain buyer.

WHOIS details are here. It could just be a coincidence. The domain was p*nisring.co.uk

** Admin edit, posting WHOIS records is against Nominet T&Cs, please don't do it.

The registrar is a member here so maybe he can tell you himself

oh right :) What name does he go by on here? Probably just bad luck then... Teach me to register domains quicker when seeing them!

I think the key phrase was "It was a good .co.uk." I'm sure there must be many people who - like me - mine for available .co.uk generics daily. As such, any particular "good" name is susceptible to being discovered and regged. That's why you should always grab anything really good at the moment you find it available - an hour is an extremely long time on the internet!

its just bad luck at least this doesn't happen in the uk space it can happen
in other extensions. this has happened to me tens of times.

Fair point. Will put this down to experience and learn from it.
