Buying an exisiting domain name

I am looking at buying a two word domain name owned by another company and they have told me to put in a serious bid for consideration. However I have no idea what it is worth, to see if we can afford it and also not get ripped off. How would any of you go about valuing something like this?

A few questions to ask yourself is;
how much is it worth to you in terms of 'absolutely must have' or 'would be nice to own it but could use something else' so how important that you secure the domain?

How much is your maximum spend? depending on the name itself, the owner and whether he needs to sell & his £$ expectations clearly will influence his decision to hold it or keep it.

I would let him know how much you have to play with (and that you are comfortable in spending) and that it is your only and final offer.

I would let him know that you have cash available for the purchase and that you would like to wrap it up in 24 hours.

When I try and value a domain name I look at things like potential ad revenue, which I can get indicators for from the Google AdWords interface and affiliate programme commissions, and I look at search volumes.

However, any given domain name will have a particular value to you and your particular business, as it will to the current owner. You should only be offering the owner a figure which makes sense to your business, and you should use good negotiation technique to buy the domain as cheaply as possible. You will need to suss out the price of the current owner in your opening negotiations, everyone has their price, just don't go in too high initially.

Thanks guys appreciate the advice. Would you not recommend an appraisal service, to get an approximate figure of the value, as everything else is very hard to decide on. Its worth a lot to me but what is a lot.... 4,5 or 6 figures. I think a ballpark figure surely helps to get an idea of where to start bidding?

If you'd like my opinion on the domain, PM me with it. I would say it is quite difficult to find a paid appraisal service that is worth the money, and many are scams.
