Hi all

Just wondering where we stand legally/morally/financially with regards to buying and developing domains that are basically celebrities names?

eg BradPitt.com

Found a decent .com thats free, of a TV celeb, with 8000 UK exacts.

People making much money of these names?

Anyone ever got in any trouble for owning any names like these?

Cheers,

Tim

well it depends if he decide to sue you, there is a high chance if the celeb is stingy, Tom Cruise bought his .com for $1m

It's daft how Tom Cruise bought his name but Madonna got Madonna#com through a UDRP case.

I personally wouldn't bother with celeb names, I owned Marshallmathers#co#uk and Colinmontgomerie#co#uk but let them drop.

I found a celeb name available with 60UK exacts per month but didn't bother with it, it's gone now by the way.

Reg a generic product instead 8)

Doesn't do the domain name industry any favours to still be doing this in 2010!

Either they're famous enough that the name's being registered in the hope of "trading off" their fame, in the form of traffic, typeins etc. Or they're not famous and therefore not celebrities and therefore NOT WORTH REGISTERING.

It's pretty clear-cut!

I know that their is a .co.uk of a politician going with 74,000 uk exacts. (free to reg)

pm if you want to know it ;)

Tempting because you could put William Hills political betting on there but it's not for me.

I bet you reg it now
