If I wanted to let a visitor check to see if a domain was registered from my web site how could I do it?

Perhaps a script provided by a domain registrar?
 
Thanks Grant - I think 1000 look ups will be fine.

All I would need from the look up is whether the domain is already taken, then I can add a link to a registrar.

Whatever way you display the results you're always going to be grabbing the whole whois data and then detemining it's availability by text within it. For example 'No match for' for .uk domains means it's available.

This should do similar to what you want:

http://www.whoisscript.net/
