Christmas.co.uk

cracking domain, but you know what I don't rate it...

how do you rank a site just for the Christmas period when all the major players invest heavily in advertising, PPC and SEO during this time of the year is vast and it would just swamp your site, I think it has limited resale value but pure novelty value.

I agree with you on this. Nice domain, but difficult to do anything with it.

All I Can say is " Visit Christmast.co.uk for our Latest Christmas offers" Steve your domain is a Beast do not listen to those who say big companies do not "need it" it is not really about need is more of the power of marketing psychology one key part of being a great marketer is understanding how human's think even Google has invested heavily in domain names and if you need a person to explain why this domain is a must have then you shouldn't be online at all.

So what happens for the rest of the year, seasonal domains are notouriously poor sellers and trying to maintain serps whilst no sales is a hardsell.

A seasonal domain which makes up a significant amount of a retailers profit; on such a calibre domain, I'd suggest this one is an exception. Plus, we are not talking serps in such instances where the major retailers buy, as it will be instantly back at the top following any large scale advertising campaign in the lead up. A major retailer would only have to include in one of their Christmas television ads to recoup whatever they pay.

No sorry I don't get this, why would you redirect traffic from your own bread and butter site for one month of the year, just advertise another page on the same URL and if you receive a bounce all the better, large retailers have large staffing and the same rules regarding ranking within Google, would you put this much effort in for one month?

Yes agreed. Major retailers are looking to drive traffic to their sites and advertise their own distinctive brand offering. They don't own Christmas, and they can't claim it for their own and therefore they shouldn't attempt to brand on that. What's more, it would be impossible for them to brand it anyway, it would not differentiate them in the marketplace, and they would end up wasting a lot of money. This is why I think it highly unlikely that any of them would make an offer for it. It also has the potential of being a PR disaster as it could be viewed as a cynical commercial attempt to cash in on Christmas, particularly by any religious customers they have.

However, a smaller enterpreneur may look to create a company or website dedicated to Christmas, and that's where the domain sale could be made in my opinion.

Someone like John Lewis would be an ideal customer and their Christmas adverts are the ones everyone watches out for. It wouldn't take long for the website to be remembered every year by those waiting to see the latest hit single from an unknown artist as they're good at doing.

It could be a mini site with the pop video, info on the artist, competitions and offers relating to their Christmas offering. Massive potential.

Could def be worth going to someone like John Lewis in January , planning for 2017 Christmas will start near after so it could be a great time especially if they have a good Xmas or even a bad one

Not to flog a dead horse, but I notice in no ones imaginings does "Christmas.uk" get used in the advertising over co.uk

Sadly I don't have the energy left to explain the obvious to the two that don't see the value in this domain and how to approach it. Christmas doesn't have to be branded, it can even be a micro-site on a major retailers own site auto-forwarded; the crucial point being it is highly marketable, especially in association with a television campaign. Each to their own I guess. I suppose it comes down to who has extensive experience in that sector or not

Wow! I had no idea there would be so much interest in this thread. Thanks to everyone who has contributed and read it thus far – keep ‘em coming. The passionate and polarised views are fascinating and actually probably speak volumes about this marmite domain. Of course I have a biased seller’s view, but it does go to show I was right to be confused about its value in the first place. As a retailer I wouldn’t want to be the one who ‘didn’t sign the Beatles’ and as a seller I don’t want to forever kick myself for letting it go for a song.

I own a top generic food/recipe domain that I once pitched at the masupermarkets

If I was you and you do not need to sell, I would keep it and maybe develop it yourself. If someone does come a long in the next few years and offers you an amount you would feel comfortable with, then take it.

Glad i contributed to such an interesting thread, I do have an interest as i have Christmas.wales live, a few people are interested in appearing on this site.

If all else fails there's plenty of people on facebook with the name "Chris Mas" and I'm sure there must be a Chris "T" mas out there somewhere who would love it. ;)

It’s something I ruled our back in the day as I wanted to sell it as ‘untainted’. It is something I may revisit next year if I don’t achieve a sale.

Creating a decent site will only add value to the domain :) and earnings in my opinion (note 'decent' is essential)

Not sure I agree Max. If you're going after a big name, having the domain virgin would be a plus (by not being a minus!).

Yes that's my feeling too. It becomes a business for sale otherwise. If I was John Lewis, Argos or M&S I would much prefer any IP acquisition was un-tarnished. Though I don’t think sentiment is valid for a sale to an entrepreneur.
