BBC News - Fake websites shut down by police

just found this on the BBC News site

~EDIT~ they mention some of the domains there, i checked one and it was suspended

It was registered on the 17-Sep-2009 by someone from china
They mentioned 3 domains - two of them were reg'd in sept and the 3rd was reg'd in Nov.

All of them have been suspended and won't be re-registered. From the article:
Nick Wenban-Smith, senior counsel for Nominet, which manages more than seven million UK domain names, said the sites had effectively been frozen, and could not be re-registered or recycled.

I just hope their was some kind of court order to authorise these sites being shut down. Whilst on a smaller level they were absolutley right to do so, the powers of shutting websites down could be extended to other causes and that's a little more worrying.

But all in all I'm sure everyone wants to see these sites pee off. I also see the media are blaming the fact that Nominet allow internet registrants to registar these names. What about personal responsibilty in these things? Consumers need to have their eyes open.

If Nominet stopped international registrants, it would just hurt the legitimate users whilst the crooks would get their distant family member in the UK that nobody can locate to reg them all.

A quick search for UGG Booots on google reveals 5/6 sites on the FIRST PAGE that were involved.

Surely Google a should be able to do better than this!

Wouldn't put it past certain groups high up to throw something in the pipe to make it so they do have to step in and TAKE OVER!

A few stories about .uk domains and nominet not protecting the pubic etc.

I don't need Nominet to protect my pubics thank. Lol!

Maybe it's simply a case that the member NFP model isn't wanted anymore?

How do you protect the public from phishing?
I think Nominet act as soon as it is reported. What do "they" intend to do?

Have some kind of bot that tests all 10 million domains? (AH! just got it. Jobs for the boys! that's a whole department required there. The Human bot for phising dept.)

I wonder if they would split it into different sections/booths?
bank booth, clothes booth, porn booth

Maybe they want to go down the Irish route. Whereby you have to prove you have rights to a name before they let you register?

Ever heard of an Irish domainer?
