Cloud Servers

Could anyone tell me what the advantages would be in having a cloud server instead of having a dedicated server with FastHosts.

'Cloud' is a marketing term!
The perceived advantage of cloud can be from a few different angles. These can be shared storage so your VM can be brought up on other hosts, granular billing and fast expansion and contraction. But equally there can be issues. For example Daily lost their SAN for their virtuals before christmas resulting in 5 days downtime for every customer on that platform. Flexient lost a lun resulting in complete data loss for them customers, VPS.net have almost daily failures with some part of their cloud. A 'cloud' is not the magic bullet some would have you believe!

At the end of the day there are physical bits of hardware you are using and you need to know what you are buying.

On the other hand I would sugest avoiding fasthosts at all costs (and so would many here)

Thanks for the advice about Cloud. Yes I do have a dedicated 16GB of Ram server and am thinking of changing itto something elswhere and bigger.

What is it your doing, there may be a better way rather than just throwing bigger hardware at it.

We run about 10 ecommerce sites and about 100 blog and directory sites. Some of my sites have over 2000 products and they need to load very fast and also have seasonal spikes for the searches.

Without really looking at this deeper its hard to say the best solution but it really might be worth looking at the solution as a whole.

Ha ha... yes I would also not recommend their hosting - even if I only had choice of setting my own server up or using them Past experiences are very very hard to forget!

Military grade encryption 256. Would this be for everything uploaded or just the password?

A bit late to the party, but might be worth considering a big box for the database backend, split the databases over a number of physical drives and couple of smaller boxes for the web servers hooked to the database servers via private network.

As others have said, "cloud" can mean anything from a VPS to a multi-location fault-tolerant mega cluster
