I am returning to UK in the near future and locating to the Colchester area (Have mates in Essex, good links to London, far enough out not to be in the rat race) I have my mother sussing some new builds out. Not knowing much about the area I am relying on estate agents to give me the heads up, anyone with any knowledge, good bad or ugly..

Bloody determined to settle down, 5 years of moving from UK-Aus-UK-Aus-UK..
One day we will get it right. The way things are headed ill end up in America.
Just as well i enjoy traveling on Airplanes..

Friday and Saturday nights are rough. Very rough.

The squaddies from the Garrison in the town don't help matters, nor do the townies who will start a row with anything that moves after ten pints. I'm no shrinking violet but even I think a few of the pubs are no go areas.

The town itself is ok, i would look more at the surrounding villages or towns which can still be quite reasonable price wise instead of jumping into the middle of the metropolis. Some of the very best countryside in the country cn be found in Essex and Suffolk.

Good links to London if that's your thing. Wouldn't know about the house prices at the moment but I would expect they are fairly reasonable for the southeast.

Cheers Lee. Currently looking around Old Heath area a new development. Not a pub goer so that doesn't concern me. London is my hometown, so need access to home, mates etc.

Don't get me wrong I quite like the place.

The amenities are good, the food and drink is in abundance.

I'd quite like having more East Anglian domineers around. I'm surrounded here by northerners and it ain't good.

Another East Anglian here, but in Norwich. ;)

Have you looked at Witham or Tiptree?
really depends on what you want but they aren't too bad. Why Does it have to be as far out as colchester? if you still want to be close enough to London there are better places to choose from.
What does colchester have that say Chelmsford doesn't?

roll on jokes....

I have inlaws in clacton and wouldnt recommend more than a caravan there!

Thanks all the feedback I appreciate a great deal of members reside oop North. I was taking a punt posting about Essex. Still unsure myself, its quite daft observing from 10,000 miles away however my criteria is quite basic though I would prefer a new build, seems great value for money, however appreciate the market conditions and given its further out. Anyway I will keep you updated. Cheers.

Have you considered renting a new build for six months?

It would give you a much better idea of the area and market conditions.

As they say, buy in haste, repent at leisure.

I like Colchester, still has a little bit of rural feel to it. The town certainly gets some sights on a fri/sat night - certainly not cheap housing if your close to the centre.

Interested in why the constant switch backs between Oz and UK. I ask because I've got some friends that have done the same thing and are now on their second attempt at Australia
