Databases and lists

Anyone know if there is a resource for uk databases or lists.

To give an example - A site that has a list of say UK Restaurants or schools. Do people goto the effort of compiling these lists themselves? or is there an easier way?

i know some people who took the time to do it themselves, but you can buy lists of data (e.g go to yell or whoever and say you want to create a mailing list to every uk restuarant, and they will prob sell you a list, thompson also offer this i think).

For schools I would try OFSTED - the schools inspector, if it doesnt go through them its liable to be illegal anyway hehehehehe so probably a good jumping off point for schools info.
