Therefore: does a website exist if no one is looking at it?
Depends on how you define what a website is, and how it is put together.
i.e. If you define 'website' as the result of rendered code by a browser, then no it doesn't, as all the exists on the server is code.
Likewise, if the website is powered by a content management system or some other server side scripting, the pages, (and therefore the site?) do not exist until someones browser requests the page.
