Hi folks, does anyone still have Devolution's bulk WHOIS tool? I've searched and searched for a download, but no luck (or for Dale's tool either). I would be extremely grateful if anyone could provide me with a download!

Ta in advance.

It doesn't work anymore since nominet changed the whois string

Hmmm, I could probably code this if you really need it / people would get use out of it.

Already working on another similar enough tool. Wonder if there's a site I could use to get the whois info, maybe whois.com would do?

I should have both, ill look when I get to my pc.

Dales tool uses the.DAC as I recall so should still work.

I use dna pro (there is a free version as far.as I know) from Domain Punch I think they are called, other than that I knock up tools as and when needed.

Seems to be working here...

Great stuff Steven, thank you! I will give Devolution's tool a go, and try the DNA trial as well.

Managed to get both tools working nicely, thanks for the heads up Steven. Concerned about hitting Nominet limits though. Is there any way around their 1000 x WHOIS lookups in 24 hours limit? Can I do more with DAC access?

I use my delay dac quota to run my bulk whois searches, most domainers I suspect would have a delay quota into the mid-high x,xxx range which consierably more and faster.

Ok, I'm floundering a bit. I am a Nominet member with DAC access, so can I go over the 1000 in 24 hours limit for WHOIS lookups? I have a list of about 40,000 domains, I'd just like to check renewal dates and registrant details. If I use the DAC, does it instead come out of my 400k daily queries allocation?

Yes, but it only shows basic date/TAG information, no registrant details.

Last annoying question (ok, 2 rolled into 1). Can Devolution's tool use DAC or is it HTTP WHOIS only? And if not, how do you get DNA to use big lists without it crawling to a standstill?

Devolutions tool is limited to whois via http, I guess you could alter this by modifying the data using the enclosed php tool but wouldn't be worth the hassle.

DNA is fine up to about 10,000 entries then slows down but I do have files with upwards of 50,000 I tend to just not resort the list from different columns.

Realistically the only way to go through large lists is with a DAC tool into a database or some form. I use php into mysql, no issue going into millions of entries then, its just time, maximum of 1,000 look ups per rolling minute, but if you use your dac to catch also then bear in mind that 1,000 look ups per minute and 432k per rolling 24 hours, the rolling is the keyword here.

Thanks Steven, appreciate the help. One day I do plan to script my own php + MySQL system, I'm surprised there isn't an off-the-shelve package available for that. Anyway, for now it's DNA Pro, and I'm having this issue where I have no idea how to get DNA to read the comma separated sctring response from the DAC and put the values in the relevant columns... any further help appreciated!

I'm not sure it can be done, you'll probably need to alter the string tokens in the whois settings for .uk :

http://www.domainpunch.com/kb/string-tokens.php

There's no obvious way on that page but that doesn't mean it's not possible as the documentation has always been crap.

By the time you've done fannying around with this you could have written a very basic script that writes the raw dac data to a text file and then paste it into excel :)

I wouldn't know where to start with V6 as I'm still on V4 (I prefer it) and its been a while so can barely remember, I just remembered it can be done.
