Domain transfer contract

Hi There,

My company wants to buy a domain name from a private individual. I'm looking for a transfer contract to use as a template...

Has anyone used a contract for a transfer before, I would be very gratefull if you could point me to a good source...

No you don't, do transfer forms through nominet - link below, do a self raised invoice, job done, no contract required, if you're worried about payment, go through a broker, like escrow.com, they nick a bit of money but worth it, takes time though.

If you want a contract, see fc domains or domainbrand, I think they've bothered with contracts before. I never have.

Well this is a uk centric domain forum, didn't realise you were talking about .com.

A dot com is simple, and I'd do it through escrow.com if I was you, no paperwork needed, just raise an invoice, they transfer the .com to your account, you have to pay max £10 for the transfer in, don't go to one and one.com, whatever the seller suggests, then just follow proceadure for domain sales through escrow. Safest way.

.com and uk are run by seperate entities, transfers are easier at .com level, they just need a code to transfer it and it's done online, you just need to make sure the money and domain transfer is safe, so I'd suggest a service liek escrow.com

Also .coms are usually just for a year, check the expiry date and renew for five straight away if it's important to you, otherwise it may just drop and end up with the person who sold it to you again.

I appreciate your help. Yes we're trying to get both .com .net and .uk address... it's the .com that I'm working on right now.

I've a good relationship with the seller so escrow isnt necessary from our perspective. With a contract in place we're obligated to pay once the transfer has happened.

I've seen a few transfer contracts around the web..

Has anyone used one?

There is always a contract whenever a domain is bought. Usually though that contract is verbal, or the terms of the contract are present in emails, instant messages, forum posts and PMs etc. It can be useful to formalise the terms of the transfer in a specific contract document which superceeds and clarifies what has been discussed and writes down aspects which may have been areas where mis-assumptions on both sides could have occured.

Mutual trust is important, and a contract without trust is not worth much.

A contract can prevent mis-assumptions and ensure both sides know what is expected of them; this can help ensure that previously good relationships are not soured by a transaction.

Personally I largely work without contracts, and find that contracts are only invoked when trust has broken down. If something is a large transaction though, and it is important to you it is worth doing your best to protect your own interests.

Is the contract just to make sure the payment/transfer goes through or is it to cover details???
If it's just the sale then can you not just use sedo's escrow service? 1%
