I seem to have no problems picking up the daily drops with reasonable good names and Im beating dropcatcher on my own catches ( I thought that was a good way to judge how efficient my script was) and TBH when I first started my aim was to beat dropcatcher. Just I never anticipated so many TAGS would come out on prenom day.

If I just time how long it takes to send an email its..

Now thats interesting as I can do detection and email in less time then email only. The bottleneck is sending the email. Maybe using a smaller email client could be answer.

we've only just finnished our system and we can check a domain and send email in under 20ms!
mind you it does depend on a lot of factors - server location being the main one.
i'm finding its the DAC that seems to be our bottle neck - 216,000 just isnt enough

Perhaps studying the architecture of the telecoms lines from the Automaton in Oxford (I assume it is in Oxford (?)) would give a timing edge. Rent space in close proximity, install server, add leased line and save a few vital nano seconds.
The dark arts also help. It is an old chestnut, but a multi-tag ring will alter the odds. I do wonder if there is an organised cartel out there manipulating the allocation. From what is known about other industries it is almost certainly the case.
There are some very good systems out there but that is not the whole story imho.

Like in this thread 'That certain someone got anything he thought valuable' - can some people name names and have some bollocks, then we can all watch them have a proper ding dong fight in court or wherever and be done with it.
It just gets very dull to see domains dropping then threads like this pop up, already in this thread someone has a system from 125ms to 27 and then 13ms!

I saw Zaffer, Fox, t agnames, Kite, Wright etc etc all catch names, so who do you think has 'more than one dac per entity' ? yes the prenoms do seem to be rather mixed, i'll agree with that.
what makes me think people are cheating is this: you see one tag net a name in the early hours of the morning, more in the day and then even more late evening. to dac for this duraction (24 hours ish), with the 216,000 allowance would mean a check every 400ms (that's for just one name). you aint going to catch nowt scanning more than 1 name at 400ms. most names are regged within 200ms of them dropping!

We can all see the smoke (total dominance by a couple of Tags) but pinpointing the fire is probably harder than catching good names.
If Nominet don't have the means or motivation to ensure fair play then amateur detective work is unlikely to bring about any changes.
I recall rumours of one or two Tagholders being caught by Nominet when multiple Tags became very popular as a way to cheat, but who and their fate was not made public. Unless there is a high risk of being caught and or real punishment, then there is no effective deterrent against breaking the rules.

I don't know about 200mS, but it's often under a second, which is strange, because Nominets mailhost doesn't respond that quickly. It often takes 3 seconds to complete sending them an email.jonno said:
