I reckon it's a one off and some people got a bit ahead of themselves, I'm sure once the issue is raised with Nominet at the correct level it won't happen again.
This also happened last year when loads of aff sites on .uk and other tld domains were closed down, it was to do with Ugg boots that time and the selling of what were deamed counterfeit boots, despite at least one person I read about being an official seller for Ugg themselves and they were also closed down by the police/Nominet.
As for the e-crime Unit, they know very well how these things work GW, i cannot believe their discussions with Nominet didn't highlight to them how these things work either.
