I was in an expired auction at Godaddy for expireddomains.com - the actual domain.

The name was upto just over $3k with about 8 days to go - I've just been checking and the name has gone from my bidding and watching lists - checking on domaintools to see if it had been renewed, it doesn't appear so, but there is the usual link from there to the auction page which shows this;

"We're sorry, but the domain name you are looking for is no longer available through auction."

This usually shows if the name has been renewed or the auction finished.

Looks like Godaddy are saving this for themselves instead of letting the auction run...time to look through the TOS methinks. Their whole auctioning of expired but not deleted domains seems legally dubious anyway - how can you auction off something you don't own?

I believe one of the guys in charge of GoDaddy Auctions did an interview at DomainSherpa.com so you might get some answers from that.

Rgds

Just checked the whois - been renewed until 2017. Whois was very delayed in updating - I checked several times over 90 minutes last night and it didn't show the update.

I've noticed that happening. Tend to be ones with reasonable PR/lots of backlinks...

The question is, is it because the owner can still renew when the auction is running? Not sure :/

It does happen quite often with decent names - but the odd thing in this case is the timespan between it apparently being renewed (when it disappeared from the auction listing) and when it showed that renewal on domaintools whois.

I've renewed domains and checked on domaintools within a couple of minutes and the renewal is registered.

Never liked Godaddy, the way they try to trick you into buying useless addons, software etc...

Had 2 domains with them when I started doing this domaining/affiliate thing but moved then to Name.com as soon as I saw what great service they offer.

Its not only the auctions in which they use dodgy tactics, they got more up their sleeve:

Once I won and paid for a domain in GoDaddy auction, but the domain was gone, no explanation. At least they refund the payment. Once I received an offer for my domain listed at GoDaddy, but later it has disappear from my account. The specialist told me, it was a fake offer, so they had to cancel it, but the point is, I had to search for the explanation myself.
