Google buys Groupon £1.6 billion

For a while their ads where on everything like the proverbial rash, you couldn't fail to miss them (except Systreg) :D

They are everywhere for me, if I didn't know better I'd think they'd dropped a cookie

Never clicked one because it always seems so vague 'restaurant + [city] deal'...if I want coupon codes (which is rare), then I'll look for them specifically. I won't be on Facebook and see a vague ad and think 'Yeah actually I'll go out for dinner tonight because there's a code for a restaurant right here'.

watch that G stock plummet today - c.4% ... investors getting worried that with $33bn in the bank they won't do a share buyback and neither do they have a scooby what to do with it... not that will make them money anyway...

Not sure the deal is done though....

The fact that groupon have gone from zero to hero in such a short space of time means anyone else can do it to.... and yes they were spending BIG BIG money on Google... I have seen them everywhere....

Would love to see the latest spin on Youtube.com earnings vs spend....

Bit of both perhaps...

I think the EU may have a problem making anything substantial satick though... it's not like the M$ fines that we fundamentally linked to anti-competition from a product that 90% of people rely on to make their computer's work....

I hope they get something to stick though as they certainly need a shot across their bows...

Anyone seen recent Bing stats? More and more people I know are using... I use almost exclusively as do a lot of my mates that I (slightly) exagerated to on what G were doing with their surfing patterns ;)

Google are only a matter of time and a couple of bad decisions from public distrust and unlike Microsoft they'll be easy to replace with a free alternative. G are definitely letting power go to their heads, the wifi affair was probably just scratching the surface of what they're really up to with our data.
