Check out the new google. Shows results as you type!

Big big change, will affect some of you lots others not. Good for some, bad for some.

i.e some singular words will get much fewer hits, as unless user types it all and presses enter it will show the plural results

Hmmm

As you type now it shows in realtime what the google search predictive text was showing all along...

Try it for your key terms.

User intent is still key here so if they know what they want chances are users will still type it in full IMHO.

What's seriously interesting is for your niche it's going to mean you potentially needing to enable broad match on some of your campaigns to try soak up some of this randomness that now might occur....

Quite scary really....

Its been like that for ages on the google home page, at least 6 months, I have been using those as a factor when determining whether to register names or not for a while now.

It also forces lower results even more below the fold.... Sucks a bit...

as in, whole set of page results inc ppc ads showed everytime you searched!?

or do you mean just a drop down list of suggested searches?

I think this could kill some peoples websites over night.

i.e you have a site on wooden chair

you type in google and unless you fully type 'wooden chair' it shows results for 'wooden chairs' if you dont rank for that then your only going to get the percent that hit enter, which i reckon may be low like 20%

(thats just an example)

yep the difference is the predictive words all appear in the actually box you type into

question is will the predictive words be different per location aswell?

Yeah max... See w hat you mean now on the plurals issue.... That's a fucker!

I wonder what the average user will make of it. I personally feel like I'd still type the full term, and I type too quickly to take notice of the interim results, but I usually know what I'm searching for and I'm at a PC all day.

I wonder if http://www.usertesting.com/ could be used to try it. Guess it's hard to get people to search for something naturally, so maybe we'll have to let time tell.

Think he's referring to the predictive search...

Predictive search? if that is when the dropdown appears when you type with a list of suggested search terms? whats the difference with this?

As far as I could see this was already implemented on google.co.uk home page, but not on a results pages, but now it is on results pages as well.

Whats the difference with this, the youtube vid just shows exactly this, a dropdown appearing when you type with suggested search terms.

this reminds me of when eBay decided to return 'best match' results as default search - the question is; best match according to whom?, and just whom does it really benefit...

I don't just get the drop down, I get the full list of results. In the attached screenshot, I've type 'hamp' (not pressed enter), I see a drop down with suggestions and I also see full search results for 'hampton court'.

im sure this has been here for ages
we're talking about predictive text, yeah?

it certainly has for the search box in tool bar. definitely
about the extra grey letters after the ones you just typed in search box, i dont get that signed out
just the drop down choices
maybe they want you to be signed in to record your preferences? for their own ends, or to sell to market research
think a lot of people who dont use net loads will have head down typing looking at keyboard tbh anyway
those who are mega users know what we want anyway, with search

like someone said earlier, useful for searching for domains :D

what would everyone say are the 2 best things and 2 worst things about it
