Probably. I noticed they'd been reg's since 98, so someone's had them Probably should have checked the history before jumping on them.... you live and learn.

Just a guess, but maybe using google keywords tool(whatever it's called now) building some lists of different keywords and search figures

Get a list of locations and a keywords and putting them together, like SEOlondon SEOBirminham etc

Looking at old droplists

Make/buy a bulk whois too using your delayed dac (I think it uses delayed dac?) and you can do 5000 whois lookups a day and see what of the lists you built is FTR
