Number 3 sums up the majority I guess as it takes effort. We all complain about the big registrars running the show, but very few actually respond

Just seems a slightly defeatist approach (even though i am partially inclined to agree).

I do think to an extent they will have to take on board everyones views and suggestions (they won't know if you are an acorner but by that i assume you mean a domain reseller). I view the consultation not as a chance to oppose it, but more as a chance to help shape the outcome in a slightly less disastrous / fairer form than what is currenty being proposed. Of course, to oppose against it completely is still an option but that is where i feel the defeatist in me agreeing with you.

Why? I sent feedback as a 'private individual' actually.

I've answered 'Yes, already responded' - but in reality it is 'Yes, already responded and will send further feedback before the closure date'.

Are there figures for % of domains developed v undeveloped? .. should pretty much show how many domains are in domainers hands....

not to mention that domainers may make 10 £10 transfers a year wheras Joe Public who has 1 domain just has renewals...

The most potent action will be by spreading the word that a consultation is taking place. It will be volume of "others" and their submissions that will count. Although in saying that, as the consultation is not transparent (anonymous and selective publishing of submissions) one could be of the mind that it is already set in motion to happen?

It lacks credibility to seek feedback from customers when you have not informed customers that it's happening in the first place.

They intend to do it and are just going through the motions.

Does joe bloggs who has joebloggsplumbing.co.uk on his van want to change because he's always hated that co in the co.uk ? ...Hardly.


If it was done properly they would ask for the opinion of 10,000,000
customers.

And would those 10,000,000 million name holders want it to go ahead ?
I don't think so. It would be the equivalent of the government having a referendum to increase taxation.

Parked pages account for 22% of total (10m) - so if you said every parked page was domainer owned, you're talking about 220,000 names. A little more than £500k pa to Nominet.

According to Nominet (via Lesley) in @2007/8 aqbout 6% of domains were in portfolios. That's probably 8-10% now. So yes, a minority esp. when you consider 123-reg banged in their 2millionth domain recently.

The only sector that will scupper or even affect this will be imo high-street businesses that have invested time and a lot of money into building an online brand especially in competitive sectors. Not all have / are able to TM. Some are new and a TM was on a todo list. Many will have sector competitors with trademarks.

. You can't assume that when many registrars simply add a standard ads holding page when the name is regged. A significant proportion of those are just names regged by the general public or a business and sit there sometimes for years.

But if you consider pages that don't actually go anywhere, parked, 'developed' and also that domainers will pay the equivalent of 10 domain reg's in transfer fees for just 2 transfers a year...

Doesn't that add up to more than just a 'hill 'o' beans'?

... and also... aren't domainers the only real group of motivated (sometimes) individuals which are organised around this Nominet decision?
