Does any registrar provide an opportunity to hide the personal data of a domain owner for free? I found my registrar offers this service for a fee. If I want to hide information on a large number of domains, it turns out to be a rather large amount of money.

For uk domains it is free and default to hide Registrant info, with option to reveal details if you prefer.

This is called 'whois privacy'. Check it. This is usually completely free, you just need to check the box. I checked this at my https://pananames.com/ registrar and it is really free. I have enabled this option for .net and .com domains. Or what domains are you using?

I've worked with many registrars, but it was always free.

Yes, but some registrars even charge money for that. I would recommend moving away from such registrars because it is not fair.
