I have a person under 16 (I think) who works alongside me, via another company, not my contract. He wants more work, I said I might be able to give him some work to do... how much do you think? i was looking at minimum wage and found this chart.

http://www.lowpay.gov.uk/

It's got £3.40 for 16 year olds. So what £3.50 to £4 per hour acceptable with bonus? I'd give him work based on profit alone but that aint right, and then at least offer a bonus on top, if the work I'm palming out gives me rewards, I can pass them on.

So is that ok? £3.50 to £4.00, I'm only talking a few hours a week as obviously he'll have school and I still want him doing his fair share on the current contract. Thoughts?

yeh that sounds good Lee,

are you not gonna give him an extra christmas bonus on top of that as well?

I have a brother who is 15 and I know that he would tell me to poke the job up my bum if I offered him less than £6ph - as im sure most of his peers would too.

Clever idea,

Romanian children writing out Nominet forms allday

I'm just going by the chart, there's bonuses if the work pays off. I havent worked with anyone else for ten years until August, it's new to me, I'll start with part timers and people can fill in and do little jobs, if their little jobs pay off, they will be rewarded in bonuses in the form of percentage of turnover from those sites up to a maximum full time wage.

At which point, if I'm able to offer employment and revenue is predictable then a basis of employment can transpire or work from home job and bonuses can be aired on top of that but I have to start somewhere. If the work doesn't pay off then it'll stop, simple as that.

£6ph... do I even earn that? I don't work, I don't know. this one is clever and fair play to him, he already has a 35% share in one of my sites on lease, he said he'd rather a percentage of sales than any hourly wage on this next job, I said i'm doing him a favour by offering him £4 per hour plus bonuses as I don't know if it will work, percentage alone could seem him wasting his time and getting nothing.

I also guess thats why 80% of jobs go to immigrants, they want to work, I don't blame your brother though, I'm self employed because I had the same attitude ten years ago. I wasn't getting out of bed for what temping agencies were paying at the time either or retailers **** wages so decided to do things myself. Workers wages are disgusting, I wasn't working for them, can't live on them.

I don't think kids should work for less than £5.50ph. If this Government had its way it would have them back up chimneys. Too much exploitation today. IMO

It could be argued that £5.50 is a blinding wage for kids :)

$13.70 Auzzy dollars... 80 rand....213 czech crowns etc.

I realise it is where you spend it, but for internet based work the market is truly global.

Oddly enough the focus returns to how good you are at your job rather than rubbish being compulsory rewarded.

Kids aren't being exploited by the government, there aren't enough people to do jobs. The minimum wage criteria isn't exploiting anyone either, think back a few years to when it didn't exist. It also rose above inflation for a few years so employers bore the burden of money the government didn't want to pay. Some people have short term memories.

If you want to see exploitation look at the deal students get now.

Go through extra school years and then university at your own cost, get in debt and bankrupt your parents OR serve an apprenticeship, get low pay for a few years, qualify in a much sought after trade with practical skills and probably emerge earning as much or more than the student. No wonder we have a doctors and dentists shortage!

I just don't know how people can survive on the National Minimum Wage. Maybe "survive" is the operative word. I've tried it and its awful. One good point is that more and more people choose self employment nowadays. :)

Ive never had a normal job and im 22! Except a part time one while I was at college.

Finished college and instantly went into my own business's!

I got chucked out of school, twice, finally when I was allowed to leave, I had to work at 16. School should end at 14, get out to work. This government wants to extend school to 18... why not extend school to 45 instead? we're living longer. start school at 3/4, I think I started at 4. Nursery before that, by 13, give option for further education, chuck children out at 14 and into apprenticeships but at least give them the opportunity and jail any useless parents, I've had enough of them.

I think the only way the lazy, idle, louts of this country are going to get sorted out is with the threat of national service hanging over them unless they work or attend further education. IMO Unemployment would drop dramatically.

My lad gets £6.50 per hour, he went to an interview with JJB they offered him min, he told them after tax, ni, travelling and lunch the money he would get he'd rather cut off his toes and eat them. He then suggested he was worth more and should the company not wish to exploit 16 year old then please feel free to contact him otherwise thank you for the interview...
