How does this transfer process work?

Hi all,

I am relatively new to this game and I have a question. How exactly does the transfer process work. IE: IS there a fee for pushing a domain name between accounts with the same registrar or does a fee only apply to transfers between registrars?

Also how do the Whois details change if it is just pushed to another account user on a registar, is it automatic or do I have to do it myself?

I am mainly enquiring about godaddy to godaddy pushes and 123-reg to 123-reg pushes.

Sorry for all the questions and hope someone can help me.

Thanks,

Nick.

It's free to push a domain from your account at 123-reg to another users account at the same registrar, I think it's the same for moving domains from one account to another within any registrar.

If you bought a domain from someone at GoDaddy, you could get them to change the IPS tag to 123-REG from inside their control panel, and then you could transfer it in to 123-reg for free, but the domain would still be in the sellers name, you would still have to pay the Nominet transfer fee of £10 + VAT to transfer it over to you so that it's in your name

I bought a .co.uk domain from someone on Dynadot a few months back, he pushed the domain in to my Dynadot account from his account there, it still had his name as the registrant, but had my details for the registrant postal address and admin email, that's because it was only a push, not a Nominet transfer.

I phoned Nominet recently and they told me that the domain was now in my Nominet account, it's still registered to the sellers name, but I can now transfer it to myself from within my Nominet online services, not that I see any point in paying for the transfer, as I can simply transfer it from the seperate account if I want to sell it, saving myself the Nominet fee.

If it's still in his name he is still the legal owner, regardless of what account it's in. It's such bad practice not completing a transfer for the sake of a tenner!

I didn't not complete a transfer, no transfer was sent to me by the seller, he said he had never heard of Nominet, I asked him to contact them to get a login for it, so he could transfer it, but he never replied to any more of my emails after that.

Having it someone else's name isn't a problem anyway, I had a name caught for me last week, Dale said I could leave it in his name if I wanted as I was planning on trying to sell the name on, so to save me the transfer fee, he said he would send the transfer to the new buyer if I sold it, so it does happen, it's no big deal anyway.

It can be a big deal, If there was any legal action the previous owner would be caught up in the middle of it as he is still the legal owner. Speaking from personal experience a buyer didn't complete a transfer and it ended up costing me 4 figures, there was also the recent DRS case for jokers.co.uk which fcdomains got caught up in because the buyer didn't complete the transfer.
