How often do you sell a domain name for thousands of pounds?

Perhaps I am not experienced enough with this domain name game but recently I have been trying to secure a decent domain name for a site I am developing and I can't believe some of the prices people are asking.

I am therefore wondering if these people are in cloud cuckoo land or I am seriously underestimating the value of domains!

Some people are asking for tens of thousands for domain names that nobody has purchased the .net, .org, or any other extension!

If these people are actually selling one or two of these domain names a year, they must have a very nice lifestyle assuming they bought the names for not very much!!

I appreciate a domain name is only worth as much as someone is prepared to pay for it but these figures do give the impression that people think they can sell for these amounts.

Some of my prices are in cloud cookoo land but it's mostly because I don't want to sell my names, not because I genuinely think they are worth that.

So there could be many reasons why a price is the value it is,

Domain names are usually an appreciating asset so domainers are often not in a rush to sell, especially if it is parked generating revenue, so you'll often get what seems like a silly counter offer from them, but from their point of view it's worth a try because really they don't want to sell yet.

So when you say they are an appreciating asset, what sort of timescale are people generally thinking of in terms of waiting for them to appreciate? Are there huge rises expected in domain names soon?

I guess the recession doesnt affect domain names like it does houses

As has been said, the cost to hold is pretty low, and all the while they are generating income if used or parked, so unless you are flipping, it is really only worth selling if a good offer comes along.

Had a look at http://www.domainprices.co.uk/ and the prices aren't too bad - the ones I have been quoted are like $50,000 for a 2 word dot net :O

Well I guess I need to put my 100 or so domains up on Sedo so someone can make an offer to me

I would say buy and hold for 5 years and see what's going on at that point. meanwhile, make sure they are earning enough between them to cover their renewal costs.

That's usually - though not always - a hint that they're not actually very good!

parking isn't the only way. Turn them into mini sites & blogs etc. As long as you have useufl unique content you will get indexed and can get traffic that way, leading to clicks and revenue.

Or it may just be that I do not have any of them parked. I don't think I can make money if they are not parked
