How to get a link from a quality site

What I'm about to say isn't rocket science, but it seems to me that with a bit of legwork you definitely can get a link from a respected website simply by mailing the editorial team of a magazine or newspaper and offering to write them an article in exchange for a free plug.

That's what I did last week for my best man speeches website and Maxim have already published an article here:

Sure, lots of other magazines I wrote to haven't replied and probably never will, but it's a numbers game and you only need a few quality links to make a big difference to your overall SEO profile.

Nice one! I wouldn't have thought they'd accept outside submissions. Like you said some of them don't, but getting links like this as least shows that it can be worthwhile.

Not as many as I thought: 4. Maxim, FHM, GQ and Nuts. My pitch was rubbish also. Probably should have written more than 2 lines!
