Hadn't seen this before...

A website on www.gov.uk

I knew it was used as an extension, but not as a website.

seems there is no website on www.co.uk

Is this domain name 'gov' on the .UK extension e.g. the same as other parts of the Government use e.g. Police.uk or is it www.www.gov.uk?

I think this site isn't on the .gov.uk extension it's on the .uk extension or am I getting confused!

Why can't us normal people use the .UK extension or is that another Nominet auction :-)

They are doing something a little different though in that they are redirecting the gov.uk sld to www.gov.uk (a third level domain). Normally you enter a government third level (such as direct.gov.uk) and you get redirected to a fourth (www.direct.gov.uk).

Edit: The same happens with nhs.uk, mod.uk and police.uk. Is it my browser looking for the www third level domain automatically? Looking at the headers doesn't show a dns lookup for the sld, only the www.?
