To be fair the later IE isn't "that" bad, the problem is that business (read the mofo'in government mostly) are stuck with Windows XP or even older, I swear to go some police stations still have Windows 98 and they are locked on IE6 or there abouts because IT Admins could easily lock it down.
If you don't cater to these people, you lose a huge percentage of office workers who are sat on their arse skiving at work and spending money on your site
