Hi,
I've been able to get an audience with tech & finance investors in the very near future and I was wondering if any of the members on here can give their opinions.

Please do not comment about the right of the dot!

The names that I will be putting forward are as follows:

Digital.Wales

Golf.Wales

Cloud.Wales

Which of these names do you think would be the best put forward to be developed and receive funding ?

Thanks

Your potential investor(s) won't care about what's to the left of the dot, or to the right of it for that matter. You'll need a business plan which shows them how they're going to make money. Don't make the classic mistake of asking them to formulate one for you based solely upon your right to use a domain.

Good luck!

Are you passionate about any of the concepts? Infectious enthusiasm is a big plus when pitching something to anyone.

Right of the dot is the killer, but should you have to go with one, I'd imagine digital is the one to use; maybe for ensure Wales is 100% connected to high speed broadband perhaps?

Hi,

Digital.Wales - I see this as a name for networking for the Welsh digital community, or perhaps for promoting Wales as somewhere that is good at digital work. I see it mainly as a forum type domain for bringing together the web designers/developers of Wales for discussion. Bringing them together in the real world. That's the usage, but there's not really much money in it. Therefore, not that suitable for investment.

Golf.Wales - This could be OK. The way to make money would be lead generation for golf clubs. Is there a big golf scene in Wales? There was a guy who did an interview with Michael Cyger of DomainSherpa.com about his golf lead generation business in Texas (I think Scottsdale). Doing lead generation for golf in Wales probably has some money making potential if done right. Lead generation and taking advertising fees from golf clubs.

Cloud.Wales - There is a lot of money to be made in running a real cloud business, if that's what you want to do. I don't think the domain is going to help you that much, because by its nature cloud is independent of location. However, you could set up a Cloud.Wales company that provides cloud services to Welsh businesses. Running the real company will make you money. Providing web information about cloud services in Wales won't make you money.

In general though, you have not specified what your exact goals are. Do you want to build a web business or a real business?

I hope that helps.

The problem with this domain is that there's only one really good golf course in Wales - Celtic Manor.

I'm an avid golfer and I can't name another course so I expect that will limit any potential value.

Yes, if there aren't many golf courses it would greatly limit prospects. In which case, I would just attempt to sell the domain to the biggest club. Golf.Wales is a fantastic domain to promote a golf holiday in Wales and get people to your club.

Ok, can a say a big thank you to all of you that have so far commented! Its great to see constructive views. I'll add some more info to the opening question:

This is a Wales gov backed meet.
The Welsh Government is to appoint a chief digital officer to lead its digital service transformation, as part of its newly published Digital First strategy.
Key features of this strategy is using the new .Cymru and .Wales domain names as default in the public sector.

I would love to be able to hang up my wrench's and take the path of a profitable digital business.

Personally I prefer digital wales as this covers a huge are of funding and investment in Wales.

See these 2 example sites that have been cleverly created by Gust(dot)com:
http://digital.nyc
http://tech.london

Both have been launched by the mayors of New York and London

That is the type of model that I'll be trying to emulate with Digital Wales.

Golf is huge in Wales and is a big part of the Wales tourist board. The is a growing trend in golf packages, boys or girls golfing weekends away, professional lessons, equipment, etc.

Cloud is a topical conversation within the Welsh gov and there has been mention of cloud based structure for Wales, I'm sure this would be a fairly good business as accelerator has mentioned.

So every public body will need two domains, .wales & .cymru and two languages? What about NGO's & Qangos?

Won't that be a bit tricky to achieve, or will they use .gov.wales & .gov.cymru?

digital.wales & digital.cymru appear to have different registrants, so hardly an easy sell to others if you can't do it yourself.
