Actually it was really good fun and I can really recommend it.

Its safe (driving is hairy though). The people are so friendly and the architecture and food are superb. Its a once in a lifetime trip and is well worth it.

Umm not the safest place to go on holiday I cant see what appeal it would have to anyone

Nice photos. I can imagine it's nothing like people would imagine.
The architecture and history alone make it an amazing destination, i would imagine.
However, i would think it's on the UK Government's list of places NOT to go?
Of course free to go where you like, but if you get in bother our Government isn't gonna be quite as helpful as you might like if they've forewarned.
They aren't scared to poach our sailors let alone a regular tourist travelling around.

Look what happened to those plane spotters in the med!

Problem with these places with severe human rights abuses, everythings ok til something goes wrong or a mistake was made, not knowing the culture.
It's a shame as there's a lot of the middle east i would love to see & just don't feel it's safe or completely ethical to go, at present.
Congrats on trip & getting back safe though.

Risk wise, its the same as spain.

In spain you are more likely to be beaten up in bar by a pissed english bloke. For that matter I felt easier wandering the streets of Shiraz at night than I do in many northern cities. For the simple reason there are not stupid, ill educated, drunken violence, ignorant people like there are in many towns in the UK wandering the streets at night after kick out like wild animals just looking to cause trouble.

I had no trouble and have not heard of anyone having trouble. Iran is not Iraq - there are not suicide bombers, fantastic hotels (not caves/bunkers) and no guns or violence. Plus the women are beautiful.....

i wholeheartedly agree with that!

the human rights issues trouble me though
only today picture of a bloke being leathered to hell with a bull whip in the town square by balaclavad Government men. For being drunk and shagging someone else allegedly.
I guess mediaeval architecture and values continue in most areas.

Still, i wish they'd take them Burkas off as bet they're beauties!

Nice one, great photos by the way

Most of the girls dont wear Burka's they wear the Hijab. But Iran is a country where the young people dont seem to want to be muslim so they take the law quite literally and show all their face and quite a bit of their hair. They turn it all into an artform!

one thing I would say about Iran is, it depends where you go.

You go to the main cities you'll be fine, start heading out towards the more remote towns that are in the borderlands with Iraq, Pakistan, Afghanistan and these people will treat you differently. They have had hundreds of years of being suspicious of foreigners and their behaviours can be unpredictable.

But Tehran is a very welcoming place, unfortunately for them, us, everyone, it looks like the next front on the war against extremism / oil. Won't be a Invasion but looks like the yanks are well on their way to indentifying certain groups of Iranian moderates that would love to fight the hardliners in government.

Well I could say the same anybody coming to a backwards remote part of the United Kingdom could experience exactly the same thing. There are unsavoury places everywhere you go....and I certainly want to be an immigrant or 'visitor' in some unmentionable places in the UK.

The remote parts of the UK you're safe.
Its the built up centres & estates.
Places like thamesmead & woolwich, near where i was brought up. Hideous nightmare places. God help you if you're green.
