I'm getting lots of requests for anchor text link exchanges. At present, I'm turning most down because

a) the other site is not related
b) is aimed at another country

Yet I see many sites out there that exchange links with almost anyone.

Am I right to be so picky, or should I get as many backlinks as possible?

Forget link exchanges and build some relevant one way links to your site.

Building relevant links exchange is important. The numbers of backlinks is not important as long as your backlinks are relevant to your site.

I think you're right to be picky. I think if you go in with the mindset that you link to resources that are useful and related to your site, then you will not go too far wrong.

What an absolute load of cobblers!

So you're saying that if I have a knitting website then I'm better off with a reciprocal link from Bettys wool emporium than a link from the BBC?

It's weight, determined by authority, trust, and reputation that matter, not the subject of the linking site.

Don't think about increasing backlink only but check weather you are getting all the quality links or not. So focus on relevant backlinks that are related to your site with good content and higher pagerank.

Surely some degree of relevance is a good thing? Sure, in the example you give, I know which I would sooner have, but you can't completely ignore relevance, I don't think.

Much better to have an irrelevant backlink from a high authority, trusted website, than a link from relevant, low quality blog site.

Don't believe everything that so called 'SEO experts' or people like Matt Cutts say...;)

I don't like link exchanges, i think they can lead to bad things. Potential bad neighborhoods.
