I wanted to register a .london to go with a .uk domain I have

Some places say it's taken, 1&1 say it's available

I can't find any whois details for to show it's registered to someone

Have they reserved names to auction them or

I have been trying to secure one for a client of mine. By the sounds of it the one you are after has probably been pre-ordered. They are currently in the process of allocating domains with a single pre order, checking who is most eligible out of multiple pre-orders or sending to auction.

If the name has not been pre-ordered you should have no problem registering it today!

All 3 of my pre orders with go daddy came back yesterday as errors - not bale to process. I then looked at a couple more I was after, but at prices of £1799, once I'd stopped laughing, I declared myself out. I hope their greed is rewarded with epic failure.

The registrars / registries are now the domainers

With .london the whois will ONLY show if it has been successfully registered:
http://whois-search.com/whois/netistrar.london

Any other status even available and it comes back with nothing.
Here is one i've got in Landrush validation: http://whois-search.com/whois/hernehill.london

Their whois is at: http://whois.nic.london

However names applied for in landrush which are currently in www.validation.london (or auction) should come back as taken on registrar EPP availability checkers.

Then like all new gTLDs the registry has reserved lists made up of:

- ICANN collision list (See https://www.icann.org/namecollision)
- Names reserved by the registry (see http://www.dotlondondomains.london/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/Dot-London-Naming-Policy.pdf)
- Pioneer Names (their anchor customers)
- Specification 5 reserved names (all two characters etc)

These are provided as CSV files and it is up to the registrar to block them or not sell them - EPP should check these though

Then on top of that the registry will now have a huge premium name list usually made up of:

- All three letters
- All common first / second names
- All popular places in London not reserved
- All decent keyword search terms

Imagine every name that the average domainer would want - they have set it to premium and it renews at that price too
Remember when .tv came out how they renewed at the premium price? That is what they are doing.

In the case of .london they have tiered renewal pricing - like this:

Then registrars like Godaddy are currently adding huge markups on the registry tiered price (75% - 100%).
