Hi,

I am a long time website developer yet I am new to domain name appraisals. I wouldn't know if a domain name was worth £2 or £200.

I have a few questions I wouldn't mind answered:

What TLD's are worth the most? For example if I search a term and find that all of the extensions are available what ones should take priority when it comes to resale?

How do you work out the average CPC for a term?

On average how long does it take to sell a domain name?

Also are quirky domain names valuable? (such as 'themilliondollarhomepage')

Thanks in advance,

Danny

Welcome,

.com is king but .co.uks do really well, avoid .me and.tel, some .nets and .org get ranked but the site would need a lot of deent and fresh content.

For selling purposes just stick to .com and .co.uk

As for how long does it take to sell a domain, only you can answer that ie, how many potential end users do you contact etc.

Do you have any domians now ?

I have a few domains I am building up for affiliate websites, however I was looking into domain trading.

What would you say the main thing you look for when buying domain names? I assume average searches a month and cost per click?

The only advantages about a high CPC is 1, you get a better cut from adsense and 2, if an end user is interested in buying a domain from you then you can show them how much they could save on Adword campaigns by using a generic domain instead and getting it ranked.

If looking for available to register domains then look for product generics with at least 1500 UK exacts per month.

If you're looking to buy then it depends on the area your looking into and your budget ?

Is there a living to be made off domain names? Is there a lot of people who does this for their full time career?

I'm looking and registering generic terms. If I was to find a couple of domains with 1500 (for example) exact UK clicks how much would it be worth to an end user?

Thanks for your help so far.

A few people make a very good living but you have to research and chase end users every day and sell your domians for £2000 plus.

Personally I try to sell for £400 to £3000, at the end of the day I only paid reg fee for them = £7 each

As for how much they would be worth ? it depends, you could find 2 domains with 10k to 14k UK exacts per month but one could be for a £5 product and one for a £500 product, best thing to do is look at other sales like on domainprices.co.uk, there's a link at the top of Acorns' home page and devise your price structure.

If you have 300 domains then that's around £1000 per year in renewal fees so you need to recoup that before making a profit.

Good luck

The best thing really is to just start monitoring domain sales for various extentions and start building up a reference base in your head. http://www.domainprices.co.uk/Domain_Sales_Prices.php for example shows .co.uk sales.

Hyphenated and .org.uks resell for a lot less than non-hyphenated .co.uks but are said to rank ok in the engines if you develop them. A domain is worth what someone is prepared to pay for it, there are too many variables involved to be able to categorise "X uniques per month" = £X.

Things like: is the domain generic, emerging or dying technology, level of competition on targetted search terms, product price, type in traffic level, long tail search term options from it, history of the domain (age, ranked, back links), with content/domain name only etc. If the domain is developed and currently earning, you can value the domain at 12, 18, 24 etc worth of average monthly revenues.

I'm fairly good at SEO. Yahoo Search 'iPhone 4g' and see 3 of my sites in the first page (sometimes one of them is in the second page).

When it comes to selling domain names is it worth putting content on it and getting it high in the rankings or is it best left for the new owner to develop it?

Where is the best place to sell a domain name? and if somebody has sold 100+ domains what is the average waiting time to sell a domain?

Thanks

The first rule should be to avoid domains with blatant trademarks in them, rather than making you money they could easily end up costing you thousands in costs and damages if the TM holder comes after you.

Thanks Grant,

I agreed, however I have personally owned an iPhone unlocking website in the past with no contact from Apple. There are many websites out there with the phrase 'iPhone' in them, I assume Apple are ok with iPhone domains as long as they don't slate or are negative towards their products.

They can still come after you now, I strongly suggest that you edit your last post and STAY AWAY from trademark domains :!:

Take a look at domainprices.co.uk, run by Admin here, for past sales. That should give you some insight.
