Hi All,

Does anyone have experience with membership sites in which users can create their own content ? I wondered if theres an off the shelf CMS that will allow me to do this:

1/ User has to sign up / log in
2/ Each user can post an items to be essentially reviewed by peers.
this would involve an iframe input per item ( as you tube video embedd code)
For each post they recieve star ratings for various aspects of said iframe from peers

Hope that makes sense ! Wondered what the best way forward would be. Thanks for any advice.

Wordpress? With a plugin for the star rating

Thanks.I should have mentioned this..... I'd thought wordpress, and its something im used to. Trouble is it always seems like a bodge , and the member experience is always lacking in my experience. I wondered if anyone else did a better solution.

I know what you mean but the user roles are pretty well developed especially if you add this plugin, you can then define every fine detail of user level control

Mmm.... maybe I should look further into the wordpress option. How do you handle the custom user form input for posts though ? Id like it to be able to email results to the user and display ratings.

Wordpress and a bunch of well-selected plugins like the one admin mentioned above, Just be mindful of the plugins you use and be extremely selective. Test test test once especially as a user as there will probably be alot of bloat or stuff you could do with removing via plugins or functions

For example preventing users from seeing other users media, posts in the post and media lists.........simple addon but many membership sites forget resulting in users seeing alot of stuff they really don't need to which then leads to confusion. You can cut down significant amounts of what's seen, if you are allowing member access to the wordpress admin instead of building a frontend , don't forget to install admin menu editor, rename the login URL and also to customise the login screen a little.

You might also want to look at pluginslike

  • Gravity forms ( paid ) which saves alot of time and effort.
  • Image compressers on the fly so your members don;t upload stupidly large images or files, EWWW is a reasonable plugin.
  • Front end publishing which gives you options to allow users to submit articles without having to go to the backend. ( buggy but reasonable if you can work with it )
  • TinyMCE Advanced to give non-tech savvy a slightly better editor to use, more like microsoft word which every fool can work with.
  • Wordfence, tuned properly though otherwise you'll end up blocking members
  • WP- review pro
Wordpress is ideal for those that don't really have a budget to do anything custom or don't know how to look after.
