mini site duplicate content

Can any one explain how duplicate content will effect a web sites rankings ?

To explain better if I want to create two or three mini sites about weight loss but use identical content on each apart from the site name, what recomendations can anyone make other than a complete no no ?

I have groups of domains that often cover the same subject so the content suits the batch and time wise I would rather amend as little as possible

Think long term, dupe content will be found and you will be punished. It's really not worth the time trying to save time by doing it. If that makes sense.

I thought that might be the case but wanted to make sure.. guess theres no short cuts but thanks for the advice

I did that and wasted weeks of time only to have them shoot up the ranks and then out of them. Perhaps a good thing to me, has made me think hard about why a site exists - i.e. not just a way to pile a load of adsense onto a page. A site with a purpose, a business plan, an idea should always be precident.
