I know so little about electricity it's not funny.

I have a redundant Acer monitor that is powered via a lead that connects it to a computer.

I've also got an old Dell computer which came with a monitor that you plugged into the wall for power. There isn't a socket for me to connect the Acer monitor to it for power.

Can this monitor be used with my Dell and if so what do I need?

Could I for example power the monitor via a different lead plugged into a wall socket?

Yes, most computers have separate leads for the base unit and the monitor. All you neede is another mains cable, technically known as a "kettle lead" for obvious reasons. You may even have a spare one in the kitchen!

Brilliant - I'll change leads. Thanks for your help!

Quick update.

The good news is that the computer and monitor now work together :)

The bad news is that the wife is complaining that the kettle no longer works . . .

Or even more technically called IEC C13 leads (as they go 3pin to C13 and IEC 60320 defines the standard).
Ill go back to being a quiet geek now ;)
