I am actually planning on moving my forum from its current host to my HostGator account. The only trouble is its currently hosted in Plesk and the HostGator account is in MySQL.

How easy is this to do? please bear in mind I am very much a newbie when it comes to this stuff.

I assume you have confused MySQL for CPanel ?

Plesk is a control panel where as MySQL is a relational database ?

If its moving Plesk to Cpanel, then check out CPanel as they have many migration tools, and check if HostGator have any in-house tools to move clients over.

Hi Skinner. You are correct I have!

Hostgator moved one site for me for free but I think they charge for any more moves. I did watch a video on YouTube but I'm still unsure.

If I just move the whole site folders to my computer via Filezilla and then transfer the folder to the CPanel will that work?

No, it won't because the database and email rules and forwarders etc are all stored elsewhere. Assuming you don't need the webmail/emails stored ont he server and you can create all the email addresses etc.

You could do that with all the files but you'd need to back up your database(s), then use something like mysql dumper to restore the database(s) on the new host.

May need a little fiddling with any paths you change, phpbb for example use (used to) a full path like user/home/nova/public_html/forum/ so when you move to a new host the path maybe like user/home/novahost/public_html/forum so you have to change things like that via phpmyadmin.

What is the site? Most sites are simple enough to move hosts and can be done quickly and easily. I can do it for free for you as my first gesture to this great community :)

I pM'd Nova a detailed description on how to do this himself/herself. Always better knowing how to do stuff rather than relying on others :)
Send me an IM if you still need help.

Thanks Stevie. I've not attempted the big move yet because I've been really busy at nights but might try it today or tomorrow.

Good luck.

It is not really that daunting to move a site :)

Contact me if you get stuck.

HostGator aren't much good with the new owners but they may do it for you. Moving Plesk to cPanel is pretty easy and tools exist for web hosts.
