Name names

Something thats intrigued me about domain names is the personal ones ie your name your first name your second name or both together.

I have my own personal .co.uk which of course is not for sale probably pass it on to the family but I was wondering can anyone recall a second name or first name actually being sold for a decent price and is there possibilties of future investments registering peoples names

I am aware of the beckhams etc but what about the ones that are less than famous and more than likely not taken and is there an ethical angle to this although I cant really see copywrite issues just registering a second name.

Top celebrities will trademark their name to prevent abuse of their intellectual property.

If you register a name and dont use it to capitalise on a celeb that has the same name then I would expect anyone with the same surname and it would have to be a surname would have the same rights to the name

for eg smith.co.uk and delia smith, she wont expect to go to nominet and dispute the name smith belongs to her surely...

I'm actually favouring .me and .me.uk 's for these now... i think there's more value in them.... only because it looks nicer.

Also I'd do surname only as it can be used by the whole family... and generations to come.. (if you're a man and keep the name after marriage!)

You'll be fine registering surnames alone, as potentially thousands of people will have that surname so it's not specific to anyone.

Names of celebrities is a grey area. For minor celebrities, they normally haven't taken out a trademark on their name.

A lot of people will reg the name of a minor celebrity. Clearly they're doing this because they want to trade off the celebrity's intellectual property. As soon as you start putting stuff about that celebrity on a website and profiting, it could be argued that you are acting in bad faith. Some celebrities turn a blind eye because they don't mind someone running a site under their name, others will get upset. I expect there are Nominet DRS cases if you want to go looking for them. Whilst I haven't checked, I would expect a celebrity could take a name off someone if they were profiting by displaying info about that celebrity.

Some celebs don't even care or get it ?

I offered a top celeb their name in .co.uk for free and they said no, they do have the .com but come on .co.uk for a British celeb is perfect.

Agreed if you are not using the name to profit on a celebs famousousity then it could well be a good investment. I would expect a celeb having their own surname would be the ultimate status symbol (better then a carplate IMO ) for the ever growing ego of the celebrity

Celeb is asked whats your email address and instead of saying for example [email protected] she could reply [email protected]....
