Anyone using Namecheap for hosting?

Looking to get a reseller account there.

I used them in the past and they were solid. Only reason I left is because I lost interest in the site I hosted with them and took it offline eventually.

Now, I could be talking rubbish, but I think they were something to do with Webhosting Buzz. When I had a problem with Namecheap ages ago the chap who runs Webhosting Buzz (who posts on here) very kindly assisted me in resolving it.

Thanks donton.

Currently working out how easy / difficult it wuill be to move multiple hosting accounts to the one reseller account and I use Namecheap for dotcoms and saw their hosting deals looked good.

In case you're shopping around this looks good - Smart Hosting signed up for a reseller account yesterday so bit early to give an opinion but their reviews certainly are decent - apparently they help you with account transfers if needbe.

Thanks stellar73.

I see they offer unlimited bandwidth and diskspace.

"Our cloud is scalable and grows as our customers' needs do. Before now, hosting accounts were limited to the size of the server they were hosted from. This prevented hosting accounts being unlimited, as a single physical server has restrictions."

I'm not tech savvy enough to know if this is the case. Is there no cost to "growing the cloud"?

If I was forced to choose between namecheap and smart id go with smart, UK based support, primarily a host, not a registrar and you stay away from keeping all your eggs in one basket so to speak if your .com's are with namecheap already.

Don't get me wrong, im a namecheap fan for various TLD's like your self........I have 400 with them currently but the small amount of dealings I have had with Smart have been impressive, their response times are great and they genuinely seem like a good team which in an industry known for zero customer relations is hard to come by. They look like guys after my own heart that customer service matters.

Might be worth giving them a shout and explaining your needs so they can advise appropriately rather than getting advise from us lot who have no idea of your needs, usage or whether a reseller plan is really what you need.

I'm not hugely techie either but as I understand it cloud hosting just means that the hosting (when necessary) can be split over different servers so is easier to scale up and down. TSO Host do something similar although in their case they offer a finite amount of bandwith and diskspace for each of their packages. As Smart Hosting offer "unlimited" from the outset I'm assuming they will have worked out how much resources an average reseller will use and will be pricing accordingly

Adam - good to hear you've had a good experience so far with them, I'm hoping I've made a good decision!

I'll definitely take a look. A specialist hosting company is good, but they don't have the track record Namecheap has (barely a year old) which concerns me.

Your recommendation of Namecheap's SSL was what got me looking at hosting there too, but only really for .co.uk names (not registered through Namecheap).

I know what I need in terms of diskspace, bandwidth, etc., What I'm looking to do is bring together 15 years of bitpiece hosting for various sites under one roof, primarily to save money.

As an aside, if I add a SSL certificate to a site so that it shows as https://www.randomdomain.co.uk instead of http://www.randomdomain.co.uk, are all pages automatically secured or do I need to do more. And what about a standard page that ranks well - will it retain that when secured?

You should be redirecting your http requests to the new https URLs unless your using only a certain part of the site as SSL only, for example the actual order processing page or checkout. I personally like to encrypt the entire site rather than a part of it. Something like this :

Code:
RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{HTTPS} off
RewriteRule (.*) https://%{HTTP_HOST}%{REQUEST_URI}

Will redirect all http requests to the https equivalent, if your using something like wordpress though make sure you change your site URL in the backend to represent https too and its always a good idea to do a search and replace ( plugin ) to change post and page instances to https too.

Brilliant - really appreciate the help.

Thats a shame, their managed VPS look really appealing.

I would be tempted to think its just the festive period, lots of small businesses struggle at this time of year but online businesses, least those who handle others businesses need to more available.

Thanks Skinner.

Looks like he has posted once and never again.

Think I'll be looking elsewhere :)

Could well be the festive period and to be fair they did get back to my initial query on December 30th. But my responses (sent via contact form and email) have gone unanswered and it is now the 5th. You need to know your hosting company is with you 24/7.

Namecheap (more expensive) have replied to all of my queries over the New Year period, including having tech look at what I currently have, offering to help move sites, etc.,

I am looking to save money and would with either, but cutting costs to the bone can have its consequences (support does cost even if servers are cheap) and can end up costing you more than you save.

Just a quick update. Still no response from Smart Hosting, but have gone with Namecheap anyway. Thanks for everyone's input.

Glad you've got it all sorted.... Was starting to worry about my decision to go with Smart Hosting in the light of your experience....that being said I literally just had a question a few minutes ago for them for which I raised a support ticket - it was replied to and resolved within a couple of minutes... Hoping your experience was a blip, good luck with Namecheap anyway!

Thank you. So far so good with Namecheap. Seriously impressed by their support. Literally just had an SSL certificate installed - first time I've done this and they have a dedicated team just for SSL support who helped me complete the process.

I hope Smart Hosting works out for you. I'm sure it will. I just couldn't risk not having the support and that's when you know if you've made the right move - when you can get help day and night when you need it. I can only go on my own experience of having emailed twice and filled in their contact form (in case emails weren't getting through) and I still haven't heard back.
