anyone recommend anything like this - i have 15'' XPS but its too big and no battery life. Thought a netbook would be good for the train - the odd video, web browsing, simple html / dreamweaver stuff, ftp etc

any advice appreciated

Never been a fan of mini laptops or netbooks - sounds like you are in ipad territory? looks much more fun for games etc but at least twice the price of a netbook:D

for the price and how quick apple release new versions these days i'd rather avoid and get pc, i dont have any mac kit either - 4 pcs! :p

I have allways liked the look of the Samsungs, never had one though.

Most have Atom chips and they're hopelessly underpowered. Go for something with a real chip if you can find such a beast.

I manage on an atom chip for my main machine, they're not that bad. A more powerful chip will tax the battery more too.

dell 11z (1110) dual core pentium but eats batteries apparently, still looks good but might not cut it as netbook, i could plug the XPS in etc

my son has a Samsung n120 which he loves & has excellent battery life

i have 3 asus netbooks, brilliant little things, i have a brand new one all boxed up that was a present for my son but he left it on his floor, got out of bed in the morning and stood on it so it has a cracked screen:twisted:

I have an N130 which is great. Good KB, good battery, good performance.
I do run Ubuntu NBR on it which doesnt need as much power as Win.

just found a boxed white sony psp in my sons room as well:confused:
got games and videos with it but no charger so i cant play on it.
time for ebay me thinks

How does the hardware match up with ubuntu out of the box? I fancied a Toshiba netbook, but people seem to struggle with sleep/hibernate and function keys.

if anyones interested in a smart little netbook im going to be putting this on ebay later:

Eee PC 701SD
black
windows xp
8g ssd
512mb
ddr2
intel mobile cpu & chipset
wifi 802.11b/g
10/100 mbps ethernet
0.3m camera
sleeve

all works perfect as only used for a matter of hours before receiving a cracked screen, apart from that its like new
open to offers

is this one any good?
Asus 1005PE

i should head down the shops and look around but i'm guessing 10.1'' to 11.6'' is going to be a noticeable jump?

I bought an asus EEE about a year ago and I've been very pleased with it. It's ideal for travel (light, long battery life, super portable) - if you want to use it on the train it sounds like a good choice.

Obviously it's not a heavy weight machine - I mostly use it for internet, but do occasionally use office on it (and it does ok). Keyboard is decent, but probably worth getting an external mouse if you want to use it for extended periods.

My main notebook is an ASUS UL30A from CPW worked out at £330 after Quidco cashback.

13.3" LED Backlight
3GB DDR3 Ram
802.11n wifi
windows 7 (I dual boot ubuntu)
dual core ULV Processor
10 hour battery life

It's fantastic for an on the go machine and not much bigger than a netbook, lasts all day without charging and has enough grunt to run most software without problem.

Only issue was the wifi card (isnt it always). Ndis wrapper soon sorted it though. Sleep and hibernate all work.
No other issues at all...

I bought a laptop to use as a satnav and so I could keep up with www when on the go. It is not quite a disaster, but it is almost impractical with the passenger seat occupied. Have to leave it on the back seat and go on the almost accurate sound instructions - too quiet and not always right, although it is showing the route OK.

I think a very small netbook is the answer for satnav, but they never have a CD drive, so you have to go through a lot of work to get to the cheap answer.

Whatever, you can buy single samples from the China boys for less than £80.
Don't spend a lot, you still need the satnav doodah ...
