I think you need to use a custom field

with the image URL. You can add custom fields from the normal New Post page.

You can get some templates that automatically pull in images from inserted post without having to worry about fields. The thing with WP is to find a template that works for you and go from there. It seemed pretty counter intuitive to me for a bit until I spent a bit of time with it. Now I delve under the hood and fiddle with the PHP to get what I want.
