From a registrar account you can set a status flag "No Longer Required". This basically means that Nominet don't send out the usual renewal notices, but the domain remains active & cancels in the way it would normally after it expires.

These domains can be renewed - it's basically a status flag - nothing else.

Also, when the domain is set to "No Longer Required" by the registrar, the registrant is warned that this has happened - I guess to ensure that they have chosen to do this.

I've never seen one of these renewed (once its suspended), once its set people generally just forget about them.

Alot of PR agencies do this for promotions like the iammercedes-benz.co.uk they keep them for the promotion then drop them like a hot spud, not realising they are throwing traffic and all that pr work away.
